Mullvad VPN Review: Extreme privacy, not for everyone

Back to VPN recommendations Review methodology

Why we tested Mullvad

Mullvad stands out for its privacy posture: anonymous account numbers, no email requirement, and a minimalist approach. It is very different from mainstream “marketing-driven” VPN brands.

First-time experience

Using Mullvad feels more like using a tool than buying a consumer service. The UI is restrained: fewer prompts, fewer “recommended scenarios”, and less hand-holding.

Performance in varied network conditions

Mullvad is not primarily optimized for difficult network environments or “one-click success”. In some conditions, you may need to try multiple servers before finding a stable connection.

Once connected, stability can be fine, but the overall experience is better suited for users comfortable with manual server switching.

Scenario notes

Privacy & anonymity

This is Mullvad’s strongest area. It is a good fit for users who value anonymity and minimal data collection.

Streaming

Streaming is not Mullvad’s focus and results can be inconsistent.

Technical user workflow

For users who already understand servers and connectivity trade-offs, Mullvad can be a quiet, non-distracting option.
